Club Chairman - Dean Ratcliffe

Dean Ratcliffe

Owing to my passion for Triathlon, it had long been my aim to start a club and help people from every walk of life, take part in and enjoy the sport.

I therefore founded MedwayTri in May 2013, putting together a great committee that helped me grow the club and lay the foundations to officially launch our club in September 2013.

It is my hope to make MedwayTri one of the biggest in the Country and give the community within and surrounding the Medway area, every chance to get involved in Triathlon and its component events.

I first became involved with MedwayTri when my son entered the clubs first Aqualthon at it's launch event in 2013.  Soon after that he joined the club and we've been there ever since.  I've seen the club grow massively over the last 5 years.

Personally I'm not known for my athleticism, but one day I will do a Triathlon.......

My first experience of Medwaytri came a few years ago. My children were members of a local swimming club and one day we stumbled across a leaflet advertising an Aquathlon the club was putting on. They entered, they LOVED it, and then someone told my youngest that Medwaytri had just started a Junior section!

Despite my apprehension, we were made to feel so welcome at our first few sessions. I soon realised that for children, as well as adults, triathlon is an amazing, friendly and inclusive sport. As the membership officer at Medwaytri, I really hope I can help others to experience that too.

An accountant by profession, triathlon has for a number of years now been my escape from the stresses, strains and frustrations of office life.

I took part in my first triathlon in September 2005 and was instantly hooked. My preference is for the longer distanced events which I participate in with more enthusiasm than talent.

In the Spring of 2013 Dean mentioned his plans to establish MedwayTri and asked me to get involved. I have been delighted to assist in ensuring that the club's finances are properly looked after.

After a varied sporting background, I decided on the spot to take up triathlon taking part in my first event in May 2009.

I like training and I love competing. My triathlon highlight to date has been to represent Great Britain as an age-grouper (45-49 category) in Beijing in 2011.

As an IT Consultant, compiling and verifying sets of results made me an obvious choice for the Results Officer role. As a father to three enthusiastic young triathletes, I have a great passion to help with every aspect of the development of the Junior section.

Media and Communications Officer

Sarah Easton

My passion for triathlon began in 2014, when I joined MedwayTri. Initially I only participated in the run training, but soon added on the swim and bike disciplines, following enthusiastic encouragement from other club members. The support and guidance from friends made at the club convinced me to compete in my first ever triathlon in April 2016; I loved it so much that I immediately booked up my next one.

The main reason I have chosen to assist and contribute my time to the club as Media and Communications Officer, is to help encourage and introduce others to the sport. Triathlons may seem an unachievable goal to many people, but my experience proves that the sport can be enjoyed by all abilities. Personally, I am not at all competitive and don't think I ever will be. However the positive attitude from MedwayTri members is 'You don't have to win, you just have to TRI'.

I was first talked in to dabbling with multi-sport in 2006 when I joined a friend at the Maidstone Duathlon. Until this point I was a recreational cyclist and occasional runner to keep myself fit. I immediately fell in love with the whole experience and spent the next two seasons competing in triathlons and duathlons.

Having always been rubbish at swimming, I eventually decided to focus purely on duathlon. I've since picked up occasional podium finishes at smaller, local races and qualified in my age group for the 2013 and 2014 European Sprint Duathlon Championships.

I've always been interested in the running of multi-sport events, and I'm really looking forward to helping MedwayTri grow a high quality race programme.

Before joining MedwayTri when it started up in September 2013, I had dabbled in triathlon on and off for a while. In 2009, I set myself the challenge of doing my first triathlon at Dorney Lake to coincide with my 40th birthday. Having done a few more in between, I completed an Olympic distance triathlon at Leeds Castle in 2014. I enjoy cycling and running but I am not the world's biggest swimming fan!

In September 2016, I am doing my first (and probably last!) marathon in Berlin (nice and flat!) and plan on doing some half marathons beforehand. I am toying with the idea of entering a half Ironman for my 50th birthday but I might also change my mind!

In 2015, I volunteered to take on the role of Social Officer and enjoy organising events for the club, enabling members to get together outside training sessions and competitions.

Medway Tri has a strong reputation with in the sport and local area for its athletes performing at the highest level, as well as it’s inclusiveness as a club for all levels of triathlete. It is on this basis that I am delighted to be involved in organising several of our own events and club participation in others. Duathlons, Triathlons, Aquathons, single participant and relay teams; our aim is to build a strong program that encourages involvement and fosters development.

I am not a natural sports person but I have been bitten by the bug that is multi-sport and enjoy organising activities that encourage others to take part. Please contact me at if you are interested in taking part or would like to suggest events that we can be involved in.
