There is no doubt, taking that first step towards taking part in a triathlon can be a daunting one. I can still vividly remember taking those first steps; working out how to train for 4 disciplines (changing between sports is often referred to as the 4thdiscipline in tri), finding out what I should be aiming for and then the final plunge – signing up to the first event. I can also remember the trepidation I had at approaching a club to help me; all those super fit people belting around the running track, swimming like fish and cycling at speeds I could only dream of. I shouldn’t have worried.

Since then I have taken part in Sprint, Olympic, Off-road, Relay and Middle Distance events. Some trail running half-marathons have also been added, showing just how varied involvement in this sport can become.

My coaching ethos is based around those early tentative steps. Finding those personal goals, developing abilities and drawing out the confidence to take part and improve. I really enjoy helping people get in to the sport, find their path to potential and those first events.

I didn’t do any sport until I was in my early 40’s – I look forward to helping others take those first steps and build from there; whatever the end goal is.
